SCHOOL SPRING MISSION PROJECT249
I
don’t need another bedroom in my house but the Martha Stewart part of my brain
began acting up and I had to respond. It’s
a nice room, apparently used as a children’s playroom by the previous
owners. I have drawn that conclusion
because of telltale signs: crayon and
pencil scribblings on the walls, a broken overhead light globe, and the bifold
closet doors were torn off of the tracks.
The children must have had a lot of fun.
The
room was resurrected, even rehanging the closet doors after much toil and
effort. Decorating the room was the last
step in the process. I’ve always felt
that was like putting a puzzle together.
Different combinations are tried until everything fits. That means that it must be functional as well
as aesthetically pleasing. Martha would
be very proud of me.
Furniture
would not be a problem. Because of my
weakness for antiques, we have always had a glut of chairs and tables and
beds. If I like something, I buy
it. Need rarely enters into my thought
process.
I
had a choice to make between three beds in my storage area. One was a rope bed used by my son in his
childhood. Ropes were used in the frame
as the support for the mattress. In the
18th and 19th century these beds were common and it was
from them that the phrase “sleep tight” originated. Ropes routinely had to be tightened to keep
the sleeping person off of the floor.
Another bed was a mid to late 19th century bed with a high
headboard and ornate carvings. I bought
it at a yard sale for $5. The woman
explained that the reason the legs on the footboard had been sawn off was because
when she and her husband had married, they were so poor that they made a table
out of it. Necessity truly is the mother
of invention. The last bed was a white,
petite, iron Victorian bed that belonged to my daughter. I bought it on B Street in Belleville in 1984
for $10. The bed sat in a front yard one
summer day, a yard sale treasure that I claimed. I sanded it and painted it. It was elegant and graceful and my daughter
loved it.
I
cleaned and touched up that bed the other day. It was the obvious choice for my
new room. We celebrated its resurrection
with a new mattress and quilt, a striking match to the room color. Again, Martha, take note.
My
daughter still possesses affection for the bed which is why it will never be in
my front yard as yard sale merchandise. It
will always be hers, along with all the memories it holds. Whoever said, “You get what you pay for”
didn’t know what he was talking about because that may be the best $10 I ever
spent.
Grace
& Peace,
Pastor
Jay

At the recent quilt show at St. John’s UCC in Mascoutah,
Sonja Myland won two ribbons for the quilted jackets she created. Jo Doctorman won a 3rd place
ribbon for the baby quilt she created from blocks embroidered by Betty Engler.
This month we are beginning a new
ministry here at Hope. We have asked ten
ladies in our Hope Family to participate.
Each of these “angels” will be assigned a local nursing home or care
center. It will be their job to stay in
touch with any of our members presently residing at that facility.
The members may come and go but our
“angel” will remain constant, The office
will contact them when a member checks into their facility and the “angel” will
contact Pastor Jay if pastoral care is needed.
We are blessed to have these “angels” among us. Thank you all!

Dear Hope Church
Family,
Thank you so much
for all the notes of encouragement. This
surgery was a little more invasive than the other and I am struggling with a
few things, like writing and driving!
Thank you so much for the beautiful and delicious fruit flowers. I love and miss you all.

Dear Hope Family,
We appreciate your
prayers and concern for Joe when his condition changed a couple weeks ago. His doctor informed us that he has a list of
about 20 medical diagnosis, a few of which could cause a sudden decline. We take this one day at a time and have put
Joe in our Lord’s care. Joe is in a
wheel chair for short periods and enjoys your visits. We are blessed to have the caring support of
our pastors and church family.
God bless all of
you.

Dear Hope Church

thanks to Pastor Jay who drew the short straw and visited me many times. Additional thanks to Carol and Bob Ripley who
prepared an outstanding Manna meal. The
humbling experience has brought me much closer to God.
God bless you all,
