LECTIONARY FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE
A CHILD NEEDS A FATHER - Poem by Marjorie
Morgan
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2008 GRADUATES
I wonder who wrote Pomp
and Circumstance and if they receive royalties each spring? That question ran through my mind as I
watched my daughter walk into the arena on Saturday afternoon. Adorned in a robe and mortarboard she was
ending a college career that began five years ago. It was the culmination of a time that she
admitted to me recently was a blessing and surprise. She didn’t expect to be admitted to the
school when she applied. When she was
accepted into the program her goal became to not embarrass herself and face
expulsion. She accomplished that and
exceeded it to such a degree that her exit evaluation with the faculty was in
her words, “embarrassing”. She was at a
loss for words in trying to describe to me the praise that was lavished on
her. Even the Dean, she said,
uncharacteristically spoke to her in endearing ways. I let her know something I’m sure she already
knew but I felt needed to be emphasized.
The affirmation she received was not only about skill and achievement
but also about character and commitment.
She reaped what she sowed. And
that made me a proud parent.
The commencement address was a shocker--it
was good! An instructor in the School of
Law spoke to the graduates about servant leadership. It bordered on a sermon minus an altar call
and final hymn. He made a point that was
particularly poignant and profound. It
was much easier, he said, to make a living than it was to make a
difference. His point was to encourage
the graduates to aspire to loftier things than just a career. Careers will provide necessities but
servanthood will provide meaning. It was
a wonderful message to give to career-oriented young men and women prepared to
take on the business world.
Servanthood is a
peculiar thing. While it is
authentically done with a selfless spirit and no thought of getting something
in return, we can count on reaping a bountiful harvest in the sowing of those
seeds. It is the great reward of
life. We do what is good and right
because it is good and right. But we
know that good fruit comes to those who plant good seeds……and the fruit is
sweet.
Grace and Peace,
Jay
We
welcomed Marshall Grant into our Hope Church family on March 30th. Marshall has three daughters, Drew, Patricia
and Tonya. His son Adam who is 13 years
old lives with him in Fairview Heights and comes to worship with him. Marshall is from Las Vegas and has lived here
since 1985. He is employed by Black Lane
Auto Parts and likes football and auto racing.
Marshall has become active with the Grounds and Property committee here
at Hope Church. His undershepherd is
Eric Ebel.
It is an honor and
pleasure to welcome Donovan McCrary and Jessica Hennrich into our
wonderful Hope Church family. Donovan and Jessica became a part of our church
family during the service on April 20, 2008. Donovan and Jessica have plans to
wed on September 27, 2008, what great news. Donovan was born in Dayton, OH and
lived in Belleville, IL for 17 years before moving to Marissa, IL where he met
Jessica. Jessica was born and raised in Marissa for 19 years when she moved to
Belleville with Donovan after their engagement. They currently live in
Pinckneyville, IL with plans to move back to Belleville after their wedding.
They both are certified nurse assistants (CNAs) and Jessica is currently
employed at Friendship Manor in Nashville, IL. They both enjoy the great
outdoors, in particular hunting together. Their undershepherd is Bruce Patton.
Friday, June 20
6:00 - 9:00p.m.
This is a fun
evening for young and old. For every
ticket we purchase for golf, rides, etc. Hope Church receives up to $2.00. The pavilion will be reserved for Hope
Church, so bring a lawn chair, pizza, soda,
snacks, chicken, or a
picnic supper and fellowship with your friends from Hope. See the CenterfIeld flyer in this month’s Herald
of Hope or call the church for more information.
Sunday,
June 8th
There will
be something different about the upcoming Hope Church Picnic and service on
June 8th. A step back in time where circuit riders were popular and
everyone from the local community came to hear the good word of our Lord, or at
least most did. Come as you are or dress in period outfits; straw hats,
overalls, pitchforks, bonnets, dainty shade umbrellas, and hoop skirts but
please leave the guns at home. Bring
folding chairs if you have them or blankets to spread on the ground. Some chairs will be provided by the
church. It would also be a good idea to
bring an umbrella for protection against the sun.
After
hearing the good word preached we will enjoy a wonderful potluck luncheon with
fried chicken being provided by the church. Make sure you sign up to bring a
salad or side dish to share and if you have any ice cream making skills that
would be much appreciated. Sign up
sheets are in the Welcome Center. There
will be plenty of fun and games for the young and old alike so come prepared to
enjoy a day in service to our Lord and enjoy some good food and fellowship with
our church family. Everyone is welcome
to join in the fun so invite your relatives, neighbors, and even co-workers. We
will see you on June 8th but remember to sign up so we can plan the food!

Patti Nacci, one of our paid Nursery Attendants
resigned on Monday, May 12. We have
hired Jessica Mueller Grant to replace her beginning Sunday, May 25. She will be alternating Sundays with our
other paid nursery attendant Verdell Peterson.
Thank you Patti and Verdell for your dedicated service and
congratulations to Jessica
on her new position.
The family of God
is called to respond to human suffering and devastation. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost in
Myanmar due to Cyclone Nargis. Hope
Church will receive a special offering on Sunday, June 15 to help those who
remain. Church World Service is one of
the few agencies with permits to work in Myanmar and is providing water,
medical supplies, and shelter materials to 1.9 million people in need of
emergency assistance. Please plan to make
a special gift on that day.
Our missionaries to Mexico, Ed and Barbara O’Brien,
will be in worship on June 1. Ed will
speak on their work and show a DVD. Please
plan to be in church on that day to learn about one of the mission projects
that Hope Church supports.
Shop N Save Cards - We now have enough
people interested in the cards that we were able to order them. If you ordered one, please see MaryAnn
Steinkamp on Sunday, May 25 with the money and you can get your card. She will be in the library before and after
worship. If paying with a check, please
make it payable to Hope Church Daycrafters. If you are interested in finding out more
about this project or would like to purchase a card ($25 denominations), please
see MaryAnn on Sunday or call her at home (235-0795). For those that have purchased these cards,
please give her your input as to whether you think we should continue this
project.
Farmers Market Cards - We are also
selling cards which can be used at both Farmers Market stores and used on
anything at their store. The cards come
in $10 and $25 denominations. If you
plan to purchase plants for your yard, now would be a good time to use
them. MaryAnn Steinkamp (235-0795) will
be available in the library on Sunday or you may call her at home.
BellevilleFirst Cards - These cards
can be purchased for $20 from Ginger Doiron.
You receive discounts at many Belleville businesses and Hope Church
keeps $7.00 from each card sold. Contact Ginger
(235-0871) or call the church office for more
information.

November 14 and 15
We are asking the entire congregation
to suggest to friends and employers to donate gift certificates, concert
tickets, 2009 baseball tickets, hockey tickets, football tickets--Rams,
Illinois and yes, even Missouri tickets, which can be used in sports baskets or
as auction items for the bazaar. Pastor
Jay has signed a solicitation letter than can be used as an introduction letter
if you desire to use it. Some businesses
do require this letter. You can obtain a
copy or multiple copies from bazaar fund raising co-chairmen Bill Gamblin and
Jack Buente. If you receive any
donations, please give them to Bill or Jack so they can be logged and put in
the safe. We will have thank you letters
available for you to present in person or can be mailed to the donors.
Dear Hope Church:
We would like to thank each
of you for the prayers, cards, and memorials given in memory of our mother Ruth
Webb. A special thank you to Pastor Jay
for his kind and comforting words.
Thank you,
Bill and Joyce Webb

Dear Hope Church:
With our thanks for the gift

us than words can ever say.

Dear
Hope Church Family,
Thank
you for all the prayers and cards sent to us during Bob’s illness. Thanks to the people who visited Bob at home
and to the ladies who brought the delicious pies. The meal from the Manna Ministry was very
good and greatly appreciated and also the tray at the funeral home. I appreciated all the phone calls made to me
to check on Bob and myself. The funeral
luncheon the ladies served was outstanding.
My family and I personally want to thank Pastor Jay and Pastor Carol for
the many visits and prayers at the house and
also, for the outstanding tribute to Pastor Bob at his services. It will be a lasting memory, and as Bob would
say “Right On”!
In
Christian love,

I
want to thank you for the gift card I received to help get me through finals

your gift shows up every spring. Finals

We
would like to express our sincere gratitude to Pastor Jay for his many visits
and prayers during our mother’s illness.
He was a true blessing from God!
We would also like to thank all her friends at Hope who sent cards and
visited her during her illness. The
luncheon after her funeral service was delicious and the set-up looked
beautiful! Thanks to all who helped make
this day memorable. Mom loved Hope! She had a strong faith! We are blessed that she passed her love,
respect and faith in God to her family!

A
child needs a mother, we know ‘tis true,
but
doesn’t that child want a father, too?
He
needs a dad to stabilize the family tree,
and
be a bulwark in life’s raging sea.
She
longs for a loving ear to hear her woes,
and
give her advice for the way she goes.
He
needs a dad to coach his Little League team,
and
show him the way to catch fish in the stream.
She
needs a father to hear her proudly read,
and
later to caution her about the use of speed.
In
too many homes the father is unseen.
What
does this to each child mean?
It
leaves a void for the world to see,
and
an emptiness where love should be.
Dear
God, bless the fathers, who are
there
in the home.
And
bring back the ones who found
cause
to roam.
The
crafters have some counted cross-stitch kits that are still in packages that
have not been opened. If anyone likes to
do this, we could use your talent to help us finish these. You can do these at home in your spare time
but if you would like to join us on Tuesdays, we would love to have you join
our group. We meet from 8:30a.m. to
3:30p.m. Come for the day and have a
sack lunch with us every Tuesday or go out to lunch with us on the first
Tuesday of the month. If you don’t have
the whole day free, come and spend whatever time you have available. If you can help us, please talk to Judy
Brindley or MaryAnn Steinkamp at church or give us a call at 233-2838 or
235-0795. Your help would be greatly
appreciated.
We
are in need of gift boxes that we could use to display our crocheted hat and
scarf sets for the bazaar. Also, small boxes
are needed for the necklaces and earring sets that we are making. These are crocheted and we could love to
have your help with them. Judy will show
you how to make them. We are always
looking for extra helping hands.
If
anyone has any ideas of things that the crafters could make for the bazaar, we
would love to hear about your ideas. If
you have one that is already made, we would love to see it.
If
you love to craft, stitch or quilt, our group meets on Tuesday from 8:30a.m. to
3:30p.m. Come and give us a try. We are always looking for new people to join
our group. We all love to have fun and
we always have a lot of talking going on.
You do not have to be a member of Hope Church to join our group. Come and give us a try.

As
we all look forward to the warm days of summer, there is an air of excitement
here at Hope Church. In our Christian Education
Department, Pastor Jay will be teaching an adult class beginning on June
1st. There will be a combined class for
children at that time, also.
We
will be joining Union Methodist Church for Vacation Bible School. The classes will be held from July 27th to
August 1st from 6:00 - 8:00p.m. All
children from ages 3-12 years are welcome.
Hopefully, we will be able to start our own VBS next year so we need
some of our adults to participate this year for training.
Our
annual church picnic will be held on June 8th immediately following our
“Old-Fashioned Outdoor Worship Service” at 10:30a.m. We are looking for tents for protection from
the sun. If you have one available, please
call the church office. We will also
bring umbrellas, lawn chairs and coolers for food. We will furnish fried chicken and drinks, but
we need you to bring salads, desserts or homemade ice cream. There will be games for all--relay races,
volleyball, washers, bingo for grownups and lots of kids’ games. Please sign up in the Welcome Center. We need a headcount!
If
you feel like coming in costume, just dig out your bib overalls, straw hats,
long skirts and sunbonnets for our “olden days” celebration and
homecoming.
As
your consistory president, I am excited about these summer events. I even get to call bingo at the picnic! See you there!
Peace,
Bill

Dear Hope Family,
This is my testimony that there is
a God, that He is in charge of our lives, and that “all things work together
for good for those who love and believe in the Lord” (Romans 8:28). My 96 year old aunt, who lived in Carbondale,
died April 30th. My brother and
I are her only heirs. We each inherited
half of her estate. We have cleaned out
her house and are in the process of selling the house.
On May 5th, I fractured
two bones in my foot and am grateful that I didn’t need surgery. I appreciate all the caring calls and
thoughtful cards I have received. Our
youngest daughter is renting a small house and the lease is up May 31st. She can’t afford to rent a larger house for
her family of four, including baby Olivia.
Joe and I have “prayed without ceasing” for Lori and her children. Because of my inheritance, I was able to
purchase a large remodeled mobile home in Dutch Hollow Village for them. We are moving them there on May 30th.
The Lord has blessed us with a
close, loving family and now He has blessed me with a way to help them. Yes, there is a God and He sent His son to
show us the way to care for each other.
In Christian love to all of you,
Marcie Altman
