CONGRATULATIONS DR.
MARTINSON!
LECTIONARY FOR THE MONTH OF
JULY
FOOD COLLECTION DURING JULY
AND AUGUST
RUMMAGE SALE SATURDAY, JULY

He sells automobiles and sports drink
and athletic apparel. He is known
globally for his deft abilities; which make him a marketing golden goose. He is loved by adults and adored by
children. And he has the coolest
nickname in the world--Tiger. Tiger
Woods is arguably the greatest golfer to ever grip a club and he has parlayed
that skill into hundreds of millions of dollars. His power and influence are vast, almost
staggering when one considers the magnitude of his prestige. I wonder what that is like? I wonder what it is like to command millions
of dollars in appearance fees. I wonder
what it is like to cast in the role of the served and never in the role of the
servant? We may think that would be
heavenly. And indeed, it would be…for a
while. Heavenly existence, however,
embodies qualities and conditions that should never be equated to wealth and
power. The authentic life of heavenly
proportion is a life of joy and peace and love.
To my knowledge, those things are not for sale nor can they be gained
through substantial influence. There is
a reason why the history of Christianity has promoted simplistic living. Simplicity, it was thought, would unclutter
the mind, free the soul, and open the door to the gifts of the spirit. This idea is found in an Italian proverb:
Poverty is a
blessing hated by all men.
The idea is clear, though perhaps a
bit overstated, that less is more in the spiritual life. I’m not at all sure, however, that poverty
should ever be called a blessing.
As the sports world continues to
marvel at the talent of Tiger Woods, we will throw more roses at his feet and
honor his skill by buying the things he endorses. We will watch televised tournaments even
though we may not be golf enthusiasts, copy his golf swing, and talk about him
using first name only as though we know him personally. We will laud Tiger’s prowess at striking a
golf ball and envy his magnificent wealth.
But maybe it would be wise to direct our focus to what we do have
instead of what we don’t. Let us delight
in gifts of the spirit--sacred and priceless.
Grace and Peace,
Jay

If
a Thursday evening or Saturday sounds good to you, please contact MaryAnn
Steinkamp or Judy Brindley.

I just wanted to say thank you for
the gift card during finals. It is very
nice to know I am still thought of when not around back home, and it will
definitely help me out living in such an expensive city like Chicago. Thanks again.
It means a lot.

Please help
us stock the shelves at the Belleville Christian Center!
During the months of July and
August, we will be collecting canned goods, cereals and other non-perishable
items for the Belleville Christian Center.
Their food pantry is always in need of more items!
We have designated two entire
months to collecting as much for them as we can. Each Sunday in July and August, you can bring
a bag of food and take it to Room 2, across from the Welcome Center. A member of the Missions Committee will be
there to collect the food. If you need
help carrying in your bags, please let someone from the Missions Committee know
and we will be glad to help you.
If you would rather make a donation
to this cause, you may drop off your money in this room also. We will have a donation box and all the cash
received will be used to purchase food pantry items at the end of the two
months. If you have any questions, please contact Christy Pannier or call the
Church Office.
Anyone interested in a day trip to the Amish Community
in Arcola, Illinois? The day would
include a bus tour of the area, a meal served in an Amish home, a tour of an
Amish farm and business, and a tour of an Amish home. The cost would be $50 per person. A day has not yet been determined but we need
an idea of interested persons before planning this event. A clipboard will be circulated on Sunday or
call the office at 234-2358.
The response to Myanmar Emergency
Relief was tremendous. Thank you for
responding as the family of God should respond to our sisters and brothers in
need. Our gifts will be sent through
Church World Service.
The trailer has
arrived and we will be setting up a schedule for drop-off of your items. The first drop off time is Saturday, June 21
in the morning. Drive around
to the back parking lot by the garage and you will see the trailer. Howard and Eva Pannier will be available to
help you unload. Please call the church
office or check the bulletin for future drop-off dates. We ask that you try to bring your items at
the scheduled drop-off times and do not leave the items unless the trailer is
open. The office staff will not be
available during office hours to unload your items. If you need help bringing large items to the
church, please contact Eva Pannier or call the church office (234-2358) and we
will schedule a pick-up. Additional
information about the Rummage Sale will be in the Sunday bulletin.
Mark Your Calendar!
