REFLECTIONS…

Silence is golden, it is true.  Silence provides us with rest and peace.  Through silence we can think great thoughts and consider possible solutions to our challenges.  Silence is creative, prayerful, redemptive, and restorative.  But silence can also be a prison.  It can be a prison from which there is no escape.  As I’ve watched my father slowly being silenced by time, I’ve realized how much I miss talking to him.  I still talk but there are no responses, reactions, or opinions.  My offerings are met with silence.  And in this situation, silence has become the enemy.  I miss my father’s humor, his quick wit, his subdued but regular expressions of pride in me and love for me.  I miss hearing the stories of his past which though recycled many times, never grew old.  I miss hearing about his pet peeves and political ideology.  I miss his inquiries about the grandchildren.

Silence is golden, it is true.  And perhaps his situation sparkles more than my selfish need for conversation with him realizes.  “It is in silence,” Robert Benson writes, “that God is known and through mysteries that He declares Himself.”  Maybe the mystery of his condition that has rendered him speechless has made room for the indwelling spirit of God.  Maybe he now knows a wholenss he has never known.  Maybe silence has allowed that to happen.  It is my fervent hope that this is so.  Silence, then, really would be golden.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Jay

MISSIONS NEWS

HOSTING A DESSERT NIGHT!

Hope will be hosting our missionaries, Drew and Carla Baker (Mission Aviation Fellowship - MAF) on Wednesday, July 29 at 7:00p.m. in Miller Hall.  The missions committee will be providing desserts and drinks for everyone in attendance.  Please come and learn what new and exciting things the Baker’s have been doing in Central Asia.  It is important to learn how our missions giving is being used to further Christianity.

PACK THE TRUCK MONTH!

July is our “Pack the Truck Month” for the Belleville Christian Center.  We are asking for donations of canned goods, non-perishables, or even monetary donations.  These donations will be stored in Room 2 for the month of July and then be taken to the Belleville Christian Center in August.  The BCC helps those around us who especially need assistance in these difficult economic times.  Any and all donations will be appreciated.  At the end of the month, all monetary donations will be used to purchase extra canned goods, etc.

Suggested items are:

Canned -  vegetables, fruit, tuna fish, soup, spaghetti sauce, juice

Cereals / Grains - corn flakes, Cheerios, frosted flakes, oatmeal, Pop Tarts, rice, pasta, noodles, breakfast bars

Staples - macaroni and cheese, cooking oil, peanut butter, jelly/jams

Household Items - bathroom tissue, dish detergent, laundry detergent, bleach, paper towels

Personal Hygiene - shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bath soap, razors men/women’s shaving cream

FLAG MEMORIAL

The flags currently flying outside our fellowship hall were given in memory of Pastor Bob Coon by his family.

If you are interested in purchasing flags in memory or honor of someone, please contact the church office.  The cost for both flags is approximately $115 and will be flying for 3 months.  A frame outside the church office will announce the memorial gift with the name of the person you are honoring.

Dear Family of Hope,

I just wanted to thank you so much for the gift card.  It really means a lot to me that I’ve been blessed with a church family that cares so much about me.  I thank you for your support, your prayers, and your generosity.

To the Pastors and Members of Hope,

Thank you all for the prayers and cards of sympathy for the loss of my son-in-law, Albert.  He will be missed but we know he is in a better place.

Sincerely,

Mae Etling and Family

It was so nice to hear from the Hope Church Family at finals time.  Your kind words and thoughtfulness mean a lot.  Thank you so much and God Bless.

Kimberly Munie and Heather Kroupa

Thank you so much for your thoughtful support at this time!  It is cherished and appreciated.

Nicole Kroupa

Hi,

I just wanted to say “thank you” for the signed card and monetary gift I received in the mail the other week.  It really meant a lot to know that even 300 miles away everyone is still thinking of me.  It is hard to believe that these were the last finals of my college days.  I am looking forward to what lies ahead, but will also miss all the memories and people back home and at Hope Church.

Thanks again,

Jimmy Smallwood

Dear Friends of Hope,

Thank you everyone for your prayers, cards, and phone calls.  It was so good to hear from you.  I sincerely thank Pastor Carol for her visit to serve me communion.  It meant a lot and really lifted me up.  I also thank the Quilters, Stitchers and Crafters for the beautiful woven cross you all made for me.  So, a really big thank you to everyone and hope to be back with you soon.

Love and God Bless,

Pearl Luther

Dear Consistory & Christian Ed. Committee,

Thank you very much for the thoughtful gift for teaching Sunday School last year.  It was certainly not necessary, but much appreciated.

Peace,

Jim Jones

“REMEMBERING” Vacation Bible School - 2009

Son Harvest County Fair

A Week of Children’s Fun

We come together every night

A treat for everyone.

First we gather in the gym

We sit around our signs

Piglets, Ponies, Calves and Lambs

Faithful Farmers - all in lines.

We talk about our Bible verse

We pass around the cow

We fill it with our money

The Heifer Fund - our vow!

Then it’s time to watch our skit

For ribbons, they’re competing

Making jams and calling hogs

Each night is worth repeating!

6:15!! It’s time to go

We run in all directions

The leaders always show the way

And they are our protection.

Lessons are ready, Bibles marked

Story time is here

Vacation Bible School begins

The County Fair draws near!

Our theme “Fruit of the Spirit”

First love, the next day joy

Then peace, patience and kindness

God loves each girl and boy!

We hear the words of Jesus

We learn how much he cares

His stories tell us how to live

Each lesson ends in prayer!

Then off for recreation

A time to run and play

Those happy sounds of laughter

Who squirted Pastor Jay?

Dripping wet, we go to crafts

We cut, we draw, we paste

We create special treasures

No minute do we waste!

Next we head to music

We learn some happy songs

We sing and praise the Father

To whom we all belong.

Eight o’clock already?

Back to the gym we run

Time for prayer and then a snack

Our school for today is done!
