HOPE CHURCH AT THE GRIZZLIES
GAME
Like Christmas, Easter, or Lent, the
annual rummage sale is a highly anticipated event on the Hope Church
calendar. It involves planning,
organization, and plenty of effort to make it happen. Row after row of unwanted and pre-owned items
fill the Fellowship Center awaiting the influx of bargain seekers, their
pockets filled with quarters and dimes, their heads filled with the hope of a
treasure hunter. They line up at the
door, poised to scurry in at the appointed time, in search of “something.” As a veteran of the garage sale/rummage sale
wars, I must admit that it still provides me with a thrill to search for
“something.” The beauty of the hunt lies
in the jubilation of discovering “something” you can’t live without. Discovering “something” is akin to putting on
the wool jacket during the fall and finding a twenty-dollar bill in the
pocket. It is totally unexpected,
completely surprising, and wonderfully satisfying. Occasionally I’m asked by well-meaning sales
people in stores if I’m looking for anything in particular. Often times I respond, “I won’t know until I
find it.” And I’m sincere in that
response. The euphoria of finding
“something” not only provides me with a desired object but also an accompanying
great story to tell. It truly is the
gift that keeps on giving.
In the 1970’s I recall a bumper
sticker seen frequently that said, “I Found It!” I’m assuming that the sticker was a public
declaration of faith in God. In three
words it declared that one had forund something of infinite worth and they were
excited about it. It contained an
experience of conversion that was surprising, satisfying, and perhaps,
unexpected. It contained a message of
having received a desired, though intangible object and told the world that
they had a great story to share about finding it. It’s like the parable of the hidden treasure
in Matthew. A man finds a treasure in a
field, buries it again, and in his joy sells all he has and buys the
field. What a surprise, what a great
story, HE FOUND IT! But what will he do
with it? What are you doing with yours?
Grace and Peace,
Jay
Greetings
from your consistory! July has been
vacation month for your consistory! It has
been a well-deserved time of rest and relaxation for this hard-working group.
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of consistory for
giving their time and talent. They are
serving their church and their God.
The
big project for Hope this month is our annual Rummage Sale on Saturday,
July
26th.
Our thanks go to the Pannier Family for being in charge of this huge
endeavor. They do need help from all of
us--sort, price articles, arrange things on tables, pick up furniture, haul trash--lots
of jobs for all of us. Have you cleaned
out your closets, attics and basements yet?
This
is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to our community while raising money
for Hope. Can you help? See you all at the Rummage Sale!
Your
President,
Bill
Wilkinson
