REFLECTIONS…

Wal-Mart has always proved to be fertile ground for me to observe human behavior and to listen for nuggets of wisdom.  I love to lock eyes with a child riding in a shopping cart who is obviously bored.  The parent is near but consumed with reading labels, comparing prices, or asking themselves, “Do I really need this?”  The child is developmentally in need of attention from the parent and isn’t getting it.  Let the fun begin!  I’m really good at making faces that will elicit smiles or laughs.  I’m careful, however, to make this our private interaction.  I don’t want to end up on a list somewhere and earn a nickname with store security.

Recently, I was there getting a few necessities--toilet tank flapper, deodorant, dog food, and clearance, almost dead mums.  My attention turned to a family who stood in the Halloween section.  It was the place where aspiring young Wonder-Women, zombies, doctors, princesses, and cowboys came to be outfitted.  A father bent over his young son and helped him climb into an Army-green camouflage costume.  I heard the little boy ask, “Do I have to wear the helmet?”  His father responded, “You have to wear a helmet if you’re going to war!” That response elicited a few reactions within me, one of them being, “Indeed!”  I was not thinking in literal terms at this point but how true it was in a figurative sense.  Our lives present challenges, hardships, and disappointments at an alarming rate.  Some are small, some are not.  And when we stand in harm’s way without a helmet, it is frightening.  Paul describes it as putting on the “armor of God so that you can take a stand against the devil’s schemes.”  Hymnwriter Charles Tindley said it like this:

When the storms of life are raging,

                                                Stand by me.

When the world is tossing me,

Like a ship upon the sea,

Thou who rulest wind and water,

                                                Stand by me.

I wish you God’s strength and protection in the battle in which you are engaged.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jay

NOVEMBER MEN’S STUDY

During each week in November, 6:30-8:00P, a men’s study will be offered at Pastor Jay’s home (16 8th Green Court).  The class will be a random study that highlights a theme of that week. The topics covered will be:

*Thursday, November 6 (Election Week)

“Is Jesus a Republican or a Democrat?”  We will utilize a book of the same name by Dr. Tony Campolo.

*Tuesday, November 11 (Veteran’s Day Week) “War and the Christian Conscience.” A collection of writings on both sides of the debate contained in a book of the same name.

*Tuesday, November 18 (Thanksgiving Day Week) “The Power of Gratitude”.  A study of the importance of making thanksgiving a routine in one’s life.

*Tuesday, November 25 (Advent Week) “Jesus entry into the world--what effect did it have then and what effect does it have today.”  Exploring the implications of Jesus life and ministry then and now.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR BASKETS -  “LET’S GO SHOPPING”

Do you like to go shopping?  We are looking for YOU!  Each year we take a collection of donated items to make our “Themed” Gift Baskets.  After many years of having “Gift Baskets” they seem to still be a great seller.  We give thanks  to all of you who make this possible.

Again to make your shopping easier, there will be a suggestion list located in the Library area on Sunday, October 19, 2008.  Please take a list…(or please use your own ideas).  Please keep in mind that our best sellers are $15 and under.  Higher value baskets are harder to sell.  A collection box will be provided during the weeks of October 19 and October 26, 2008 in the Library Area.  The collection deadline will be on Sunday, November 2, 2008.

BASKET MAKERS NEEDED !!!!!!  Sunday, November 9th (after worship service)

We need YOU to help put the baskets together.  (The more helpers, the quicker we get done.)  We need your help this day, so plan to volunteer.  It’s a great way to help with the bazaar.  (In the past few years it has only taken a few hours to make the baskets).

BASKETS NEEDED:  We need medium and large baskets.  We can also use a variety of containers to be used like baskets.  A variety gives a great selection.

BAZAAR WORKERS NEEDED:  Helpers to sell the baskets during the bazaar are always needed.  Our basket area is a great place to work and all shifts are available.  You can make your own schedule.  Let us know whenyou can help.  Please plan to help in any way possible.  We need Shoppers, Makers, Workers!

Thank you - Julie Douglas and Carol Krausz

Jewelry Wanted for Bazaar:  We need your old jewelry and watches (broken or not).  Silver or gold makes no difference.  Please bring to the church office or see Lena Mae Gamblin.
