REFLECTIONS…

A spirit life is one that remembers.  The memories are precious, sacred, holy to us because they are the building blocks of our life.  And if we can stand in that place, we touch the past and bathe in the awesome power of holiness.  God reminded Moses to remove his sandals because the ground upon which he stood was far too special for dirty footwear.  Plus, this patch of earth was too wonderful--it deserved a bare foot in the same way that meeting someone for the first time necessitates removing the glove from your hand.  Special moments require the respect of bare skin.

Moses stood on holy ground, hiding his face because he was so overwhelmed to be there.  A holy place has that kind of effect.  I’ve heard that said about Gettysburg in the early morning as one watches the sun rise or the cemetery at Normandy Beach.  It happened to Ms. Watts, the character in the movie, A Trip to Bountiful.  She wanted  to touch the home of her youth once more before she died.  It occurs in churches on a regular basis as parishioners gather in the spaces where they have laughed and wept and prayed and sang.  They are the places of confession and communion, baptisms and funerals, confirmations and transformations.  It is holy ground.  What else could I call the spot, the exact spot where I stood to be married?  How else could I describe that exact spot that also held the casket of my father?  I’ve been on my knees in that spot.  I’ve told jokes there.  Holy space invites tears and laughter and everything between.  It is sacred ground.

Holly and I recently visited the seminary from where we graduated 25 years ago.  It was returning to holy ground.  There we met, were married, began our family, and formed relationships that were and are cherished.  It is very clear to me why it is so important to trust God and not allow fear to rule the day. Fear easily could have prevented me 25 years ago from driving west on I-70 to a place I had never been.  How different my life would be.

Grace & Peace,

Jay

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Last year, through Operation Christmas Child, over 1.2 million shoe boxes packed full of gifts and goodies were wrapped, packed and sent to children in disadvantaged countries.

Your family, neighborhood, school, church or community group can be part of this Christmas miracle in 2009, discovering the power of a simple gift and reminding a child in need that God loves them and they have not been forgotten.

Here is what to do:

1.    SHOE BOX  -  Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container.  You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required.  Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.

2.    BOY OR GIRL - Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age

3.    CATEGORY:  2-4, 5-9, 10-14.  Pick out the appropriate boy/girl label on the back of the flyer/insert at church.  Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.

4.    FILL WITH GIFTS - Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child.  Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page.

5.    INCLUDE YOUR DONATION - Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs.  You can write a check to SAMARITAN’S PURSE (note OCC on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box.  If you or your family is preparing more than one shoe box, please make one combined donation.

6.    GATHERING DATE - On Sunday, November 8 at the 10:30 service, we will place our shoe boxes at the altar.

GIFT IDEAS

·         TOYS - Small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch-A-Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc.

·         SCHOOL SUPPLIES - Pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

·         HYGIENE ITEMS - Toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.

·         OTHER - Hard candy and lollipops (please double bag all candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)

·         A PERSONAL NOTE - In a separate envelope, you may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family.  (If you include your name and address, the child may write back).

DO NOT INCLUDE:

Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.
